A Walk in the Garden
This painting was inspired by the photographs and sketches from my recent field trip to Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, VA; and was a joy to paint. As I walked through this beautiful garden, I found myself dreaming up ideas for my own backyard garden. Even though most of the flowers were not yet in bloom on this early spring day, I could envision what a riot of color it would become in the upcoming weeks.
It was a quiet weekday morning at the garden, and I had arrived just as they were opening for the day. For a while, I was the only non-employee wandering around. There were so many lovely things to see, and I took hundreds of photographs. About mid-day, just as I was gathering myself to leave, I spotted this man walking through the garden. He seemed to be enjoying it as much as i was, and I imagined that he too was dreaming up ideas for his own garden.. He walked slowly along the path, examining every plant. I knew that I had to include him in my painting.
On my easel right now is another painting from this visit. Can you guess which of my sketches is going to be next, or what my next field trip will be?
