I recently decided to make a painting of some cut flowers as a way to keep them around a little longer. At first, I did some gouache paintings in my sketchbook, but one stood out as a favorite, so I painted it in acrylic on canvas. It was so much fun, I think I will make a regular habit of buying flowers and painting them. Back in my San Francisco days, I had a roommate who also loved having flowers around. There was a sweet man who sold flowers around the corner from our apartment, and each week, we took turns buying a bouquet. For a mere $5 a week, we always had a bouquet of beautiful flowers, and our favorites were tulips, irises and freesia. These days, the closest florist is the grocery store, so my pickings are not as fresh or varied, but I also have a garden now, and each year, I add some new flower beds. I look forward to the day when all I have to do is go out to the garden for something beautiful to bring inside and paint.
