Global Talent Search 2015
A few months ago, I received an e-mail from the Lilla Rogers Studio School about the Global Talent Search. Every year, Lilla hosts an illustration and design contest, and the winner gets 2 years representation with her agency. I had recently taken the Make Art that Sells courses, and I knew that the assignment was sure to be a fun project, so I immediately signed up. The first assignment did not disappoint. We received a lovely story about a day in the life of a fictional woman "Antoinette" and the assignment was to design a pair of sneakers she would wear.
After reading the story, I pictured a sneaker with lots of feminine flowers and scroll work. I jumped in and started sketching and painting flowers and scrolls in gouache which I scanned and manipulated in Photoshop. I enjoy working this way, because I get the best of both worlds - the pleasure of hand painting my icons, and the flexibility of manipulating them in different ways on the computer.
This is the page I submitted to the contest. I had a great time working on it, and think I will continue working with some of these elements to create some companion prints to go with the floral. I also loved thinking about a specific person as I designed (even though she was fictional) and I think I will either continue to design for "Antoinette" or create some characters of my own to design for.
